2021 Breeding Plans take shape

14 Dec 2020

In selecting our matings each year, our primary objective is to breed a racehorse rather than to breed in anticipation of the commercial market.  The physical appearance of our foals has steadily improved with each season and our average earnings/starter ($92,000) and starts/starter (11) have all increased since 2009.  We feel that if producing a racehorse is at the forefront of our minds when planning matings that this will ultimately reward us in the sales ring for the bloodstock we do end up selling.

In alphabetical order, here are our plans for 2021:

Ameriel – She’s a well put together American Pharoah filly, maiden mare for the 2021 season.  We chose McKinzie for her first year because we feel they match well physically and we believe McKinzie will work as a stallion.

Ansible – Currently in foal to bubble sire Connect, she will be bred to Omaha Beach in 2021.  Omaha Beach is an interesting stallion in his own right coming from the family of Take Charge Lady – we felt that physically he matched with Ansible and would create a 8-9 furlong dirt runner as Ansible herself was stakes placed at 8.5 and Omaha Beach was best at 9 furlongs on dirt.

Arisia – Talented daughter of taproot mare Gold Rush Queen, she is currently in foal to Street Boss and will be bred to Dialed In for the 2021 season.  We chose Dialed In because he is a proven source of sound racehorses while also being by Mineshaft who goes back to the AP Indy sire line that works extremely will with everything from the Gold Rush Queen family.  Dialed In has proven to be a very useful sire of winners and can get a class horse as seen by $5M earner Gunnevera.  Dialed In has a massive crop of 2-year olds in 2020, so he is one of our value plays.

Arkanian – Currently in foal to Uncle Mo, we have high hopes for this daughter of Ender’s Sister.  She will be bred to Mastery in 2021.  Physically we really like this mating as it doubles up on her positive attributes such as a big shoulder and great hip while also not reinforcing any of her minor shortcomings from a physical standpoint.  Prior to her injury, she showed an abundance of talent and was bred to be a 7 Furlong specialist and has that look to her as well.  Combined with Mastery’s physique and race record, we felt this was a great option for Arkanian.

Athenian (GB) – Produce and Age wise, this is the best mare on the farm currently, and we felt it was important to breed her with that in mind.  For 2021 we chose American Pharoah for her because he has shown the ability to get extremely high-class turf runners while also maintaining a somewhat dirt look to his progeny.  Athenian herself is the epitome of 6 furlong euro speed with a massive shoulder, girth, and hip but does not have the other short comings of euro-US horses such as huge dinner-plate like feet.  We are excited about this mating and hope for a filly!

Auntie Joy – Currently in foal to American Pharoah, she has not had the best luck as a broodmare so far in her 2nd career.  We chose Omaha Beach for her in 2021 because it combines two established dirt families as well as his appeal commercially.

Barbara Gordon – A maiden mare for 2020, her career was cut short by minor injuries that added up.  She hails from Green Lantern’s other big family that produced the likes of G1W Karelian, G2W Frostmourne, and G2P Colgan’s Chip.  Knowing the family at large and identifying that it needs some quality and speed, we chose Blame for her in 2021.  He provides a good base to get her broodmare career started while also having the potential to produce a horse that can run on any surface at sprint or staying distances.  We have liked Blame for a while but never had a mare that would match with him physically, so this will be our first time using him as a stallion.

Beach Diva – An expensive yearling and winner on the track she is in foal to Street Sense (her first mating) and will be bred to Mastery in 2021.  Similar to Arkanian, we feel this mating physically matches with her good qualities in addition to her racing style.  Hailing from the family of turf specialists this is a play to move the pedigree towards dirt (beach diva is by malibu moon).

Broken Bridle – Talented daughter of Broken Vow, she is an imposing physical that can match with a plethora of stallions in Kentucky.  She is currently in foal to Twirling Candy and will be bred to Hard Spun for the 2021 season.  We chose Hard Spun due to his match with Broken Bridle physically as well supplying us with more information about how this mare’s progeny will look overall.  The combination from this mating should yield a 7-8 furlong dirt horse, and we’re hopeful for a filly.

Castellani – A massive daughter of Quality Road, she is currently in foal to superstar Kitten’s Joy with the intention of breeding to Mendelssohn in 2021.  Her size and class drew us to breed her to our best stallion share in 2020, and we believe Mendelssohn will prove to be a top class stallion as he is by the great Scat Daddy and from the family of Into Mischief/Beholder.

Clever Beauty – Currently in foal to Kantharos, we wanted speed and precocity as her previous matings were to later maturing stallions.  In 2021 we plan to breed her to Connect whom was a touch later maturing as well as a top-class miler and she herself was bound to be a mile type prior to her injury on the racetrack after winning a stake at Churchill Downs beating G2W Vexed and superstar G1W Tepin.

Criminal Mischief – A recent addition to the broodmare band, her first foal was a well received Gun Runner.  Currently in foal to Speightstown, we have high hopes for her as a broodmare and will be sending her to McKinzie for 2021.  Going to McKinzie we think will give her some size and scope while maintaining the positive physical attributes she possesses and passed to her first foal.

Delizia – A staple in the Green Lantern broodmare band, she will be 21 years old this season and in tremendous health and physical condition.  She is currently in foal to Connect and we plan to send her back to Goldencents in 2021 after seeing her foal of 2020.  She has been kind to us and at the end of her career, she has a forever home with our other retired mares.

Dragon Army – A daughter of Ender’s Sister – she may prove to be a quality mare herself.  In foal to Mastery because of their physical characteristics as well as combining some very potent sire lines we feel this foal will have a lot of potential.  For 2021 we will be using Connect as the Curlin line has worked with the overall family and because of their likeness physically.

Eareckson – A daughter of Oasis Dream from an established Aga Khan family she is a maiden for the 2021 breeding season.  We know she was a turf miler and prefer to keep her in that realm with her mating choices.  This led us to Caravaggio who is new in the US for 2021 and by the late great Scat Daddy.  He was a tremendously talented sprinter at 2-3 in Europe and feel this has a good chance to produce a gifted horse.  He is standing at Ashford, and like their late superstar Giant’s Causeway stood his first years at their home base in Ireland before relocating to Ashford.

Ender’s Sister – A daughter of blue hen Gold Rush Queen, she allowed us to reach new highs with her son, MG1W Track-Record-Setting AP Indian.  Given her best racing progeny have been colts, we have tried to utilize stallions that are sires of sires.  We break from that trend now and will be sending her to City of Light for 2021 who is currently unproven.  This mating came about because we have seen his progeny at home and at the sales and we judged that he has an above average chance at being an influential stallion.

Gotta Have Her – Picked and trained by Jenine Sahadi, she is lovely mare who has not has the best luck in the breeding shed.  Currently in foal to Street Boss, we are trying to match her with stallions that are precocious and have proven to get quality horses.  She has a good sized Dialed in on the ground and we are using Munnings for the 2021 season.  He is a hard knocking sire that has thrown good horses that have speed.  We are also believ she will fit well with the Speightstown line.

Irish Mischief – A 2020 November Purchase, she is a maiden mare whom we like physically and chose Munnings for her as the first mating.  We picked Munnings because of his ability to throw racehorses and we wanted to start her career off with something with quality who is proven.

Irridescence (SAF) – A superstar race mare, she has yet to be productive in the breeding shed but her Declaration of War (2019) looks and trains like quality from what we have heard through the grapevine.  Currently in foal to Noble Mission, we plan to breed her to Air Force Blue for the 2021 season.  We believe going to something with speed and precocity should help her produce a racehorse fit for the US training system.

Rill – A daughter of millionaire Seattle Smooth, she is in foal to Twirling Candy for her first mating and will be bred back to Vekoma in 2021.  We chose Twirling Candy because it should give her a good base to start from for her broodmare career and then Vekoma because he was a very talented sprinter and she needs speed.

Scat Maggie – A maiden mare by Scat Daddy she will be bred to Classic Empire in 2021.  We chose him because her half-sister, Blue Sky Baby, is by Pioneerof the Nile (Classic Empire’s sire) and she is a solid allowance runner early in her career.  In addition to the potential nick in the mating, both had the same preferred racing distance while Classic Empire should be a positive Speed addition.

Sex Symbol – A first time foaling mare currently in foal to red-hot City of Light, we chose to send her to Twirling Candy for the 2021 season because he is proven and also will help refine some of her physical characteristics.  Hailing from one of the better thoroughbred families in the 20th century, we feel matching her with a dirt speed influence will help revitalize her going into her 2nd career as a broodmare.

Taurine – The highest price yearling Green Lantern has purchased in the last decade, her first foal by Street Sense is good looking and acts very classy.  She is currently in foal to Uncle Mo.  For 2021, we chose to breed her to Street Sense because he physically fits well with her, also because the Street Cry line has worked well with the family in half-brother G1W Capo Bastone.  We believe in this filly and she has given us hope so far.

Ultimate Cause – A newer addition to the broodmare band, she produced a lovely City of Light filly in 2020 and is in foal to Candy Ride at this time.  We are breeding her back to Kitten’s Joy in 2021 because we feel their racing abilities line up as well as physically matching to produce a sound racehorse.  She hails from the family of KY Derby winner Monarchos and her dam was stakes place sprinting on turf.
