Clever Beauty takes the Rags For Riches at Churchill

06 Nov 2013

For Clever Beauty, her first time across the finish line first in a race happened to be in stakes company.  She broke her maiden when finishing second last out but was elevated to the top spot when the winner was disqualified for interference with the third place finisher.  However, she showed herself deserving in this, only her third lifetime start.

The one turn mile suited her perfectly.  She settled in behind a reasonable pace (:23) early on, moved to challenge the leaders entering the turn (:47.1) and once gaining the lead, held on gamely to score by just under a length.  Final time for the mile was 1:37.70.  Jockey Corey Lanerie guided the filly in a competent and confident manner.

Clever Beauty is the first of this crop of 2-year-olds to earn black type, but hopefully will not be the only one.  Tapiteao made her second start in the day's first race and ran a much improved second in straight maiden company.

She has plenty of underlying pedigree and, being by Indian Charlie, could have substantial upside both on the track and in the breeding shed.
